The was there to suggest Codetta would be hard to beat when she resumed at Rosehill last Saturday and while she just found one slicker on the day her performance has ‘back me next time’ written all over it.
And she has an unbeaten second-up record to back that up.
Punter’s Intelligence data showed the filly clocked the meeting’s fastest last 600m of 34.07, and last 200m of 11.45, as she charged into second place behind King’s Secret over the 1100m.
It’s notable that her wins to date have been at 1200m and 1250m so perhaps she found the shorter trip just a bit sharp for her against a gelding that was race fit and had a head start.
Take nothing away from King’s Secret, he’s an up and comer and he still managed to run the third fastest last 600m of 34.36 while back in the field perennial finisher Island Dec was a bit quicker than him home with a 34.27 final 600m.
The three-year-olds ran a faster overall time than the Midway over the same trip earlier in the day by just under two lengths. Codetta stopped the clock at 1:06.40 while Lady Extreme recorded 1:06.66.
That said, Lady Extreme’s effort was excellent in its own right. She was first-up with just a jump out at home behind her and she clocked a 34.60 final 600m that was over three lengths faster than the next best and she was the only horse in that race to break 35.
Naturally, her final 200m was the quickest as well as she’s run 11.85 and again the only horse to break 12. There’s a 1200m Midway for her in the next couple of weeks and you’d imagine she’ll only be fitter.
Wouldn’t be too hard on Hidden Achievement even though he wasn’t able to win the Schweppes Handicap (1300m) as the first two home really controlled the race.
The colt was a closing third and ran the race’s fastest last 600m of 34.75 and the fastest last 200m of 11.55 and he’s clearly looking for a bit further as well.
It wouldn’t be a surprise if this two-year-old race proves to be a good form reference as you could make a case that all seven youngsters performed quite nicely in their own way.
The winner Zebra Finch asserted his authority from on speed with the race’s best 400m-200m of 11.30; fifth placed Queen Of Clubs has run 34.82 for her last 600m and Sarapo has been just outside the race’s best final 600m with 34.76 even though he just beat Swift Legend home in sixth place.
Watch out that Little Cointreau doesn’t grab a Saturday race this prep after his solid third in the Ranvet Handicap (1500m) on a track that was still a bit wetter than he prefers.
He’s run the equal fastest last 600m of 35.13, with stayer Guzumped, and the fastest last 200m of 11.89 in conditions he’s not the most comfortable in.
Dylan Gibbons had everyone talking with his bold ride on Half Yours to win the Captivant @ Kia Ora Handicap (1800m) coming from last at the 800m and sweeping around them.
The leader, and eventual runner-up, Walking Painting had slowed them up in the middle stages with a 13.39 (1400m-1200m) and 13.41 (1200m-1000m) and it must have been swirling in Gibbons’ mind that something had to be done.
From last at the 800m he’s sped around them in 11.69, around six lengths faster than anything else, and by the 600m mark he’d taken the lead.
He’s kept up the gallop running another race best 11.46 from the 600m-400m and sustained the run pretty well running 11.80 (400m-200m) and 12.30 for the last 200m. Overall, his last 600m of 35.56 was just under a length faster than the next best (Seafall 35.69) but he left them standing with the midrace move.
Misterkipchoge did his thing and ran the fastest last 200m of 12 seconds to run fourth.
A race later Gibbons did it again to a lesser extent as he timed his run on Liberty State to win the TAB Handicap (1200m) with easily the fastest last 600m of 34.89 and last 200m of 11.77. The mare is unbeaten second-up but that was her first fresh win.
Fastest last 600m: Codetta 34.07
