It’s hard to take anything away from In Flight as she climbed another rung with her barnstorming finish to claim the Bob Charley AO Stakes (1100m) at Randwick on Saturday.
The Listed sprint should also prove to be a handy form race for the winter months.
From a position you’d describe as slightly tricky, strung up in a bunching field in the three wide line with horses around her, In Flight was still able to balance up and produce a big sprint to win in unsurprisingly the fastest last 600m of the race.
Punter’s Intelligence data showed she clocked 33.73 for that section with the 400m-200m of 10.86 as she set out after Brudenell who had sat on the speed and hit the front.
In Flight sustained the run quite well with a final 200m of 11.65, just 0.02 outside the race’s best.
The fact Brudenell, and early leader South Of India, stayed on to run second and fourth respectively highlights the effort by the Joe Pride-trained mare to given them a decent start and still prevail.
A pair of Chris Waller mares made promising returns in behind the placings in the Bob Charley with Kazou a real eye-catcher running into fifth.
She’s run 33.81 for her last 600m after sitting back last and wide, and her last 200m was the race’s best in 11.63. She’s won six from 13 with those wins at 1200m and 1300m so it was a promising return.
Stablemate Cigar Flick is a shade enigmatic, with four from 23, but she had a slightly interrupted age as she finished off in a last 600m of 33.90 with her last 200m of 11.69 not far off the winner.
There should be more wins in store for Headley Grange after his first-up success in the Singapore Pools Handicap (1300m).
It’s not often that a winning horse improves his sectionals for each 200m split in the run home but that’s what the gelding did, thanks somewhat to being held up for runs in the straight.
Though his last 600m of 35.30 was a few lengths short of the race’s best he’s run 12 from the 600m-400m then 11.71 from the 400m-200m and a final 200m of 11.59. It’s probably the ideal way to kick off a campaign and a bonus that he won.
Often under-rated mare Dark Glitter posted the race’s best of 34.76 as she notched another placing in third.
With an improving track and the short trip it’s not surprising the Toyota Forklifts Handicap (1000m) is responsible for the meeting’s fastest last 600m of 33.61 which went to Queen Of The Mile, who stamped herself as a coming winner for many more reasons that just the time alone.
What the Michael Freedman-trained mare isn’t is a 1000m horse, she’s also not a wet tracker and she’s not usually near last coming to the turn in her races.
Under those circumstances to run fourth was a big effort, she was fastest from the 400m-200m (10.86) and second fastest for the last 200m in 11.82. Not That Easy sprouted wings late running 11.48 for her last 200m.
A few others to note:
Forgive Hollywood Hero for his unplaced effort, he gave away an impossible start but ran home in a race best 35.72 over the mile.
Powder Man’s first-up fourth in the TAB Highway was handy, he’s clocked the race’s fastest last 600m of 34.38 and last 200m of 11.72.
Callistemon has a Midway win in her after a luckless third running 34.84 and 11.88, just outside the race’s best last 600m and 200m.
Fastest last 600m: Queen Of The Mile 33.61
